A word or two

UBW works a lot with found objects, often with used and worn-out iron gadgets. These are displaced from their original functions of puncturing, boring, cutting, etc., then wrapped in several layers of paper and become, as she calls it, “be-skinned” and converted into an “other” condition, to some extent mysterious. The materials arise again as “beings” or “bodies” …

When UBW is mainly “in the material,” that is, when she is close to the preferred components – metal (wire), paper, coffee, tea, etc. – this happens purely haptically. She immediately becomes absorbed in acertainment through touch in an attempt at multifaceted manipulation, and ultimately cannot leave it at that: she forms, layers and embeds...
In her drawings she forms the motif into a relief with her fingers in the air, before embedding it in paper...

UBW also deals with the theoretical foundations of art and design, above all with the creative process. In the origin of the word “create,” she sees not only the latin creare as creating, making, forming, but also crescere as growing, thriving, becoming. the creative process is about unfettered making as well as respectfully allowing things to come into being. in all this the act itself, that is, the act of running through the series of steps, assembles from order and chaos a new or different solution to a challenge, and this process is more significant than the mere result.
